ReStor Aspheric Lens Implant (Alcon Surgical)
Multifocal lenses are a recent development in cataract removal and lens implantation. These lenses provide relative independence from glasses using a variety of technologies to create multiple focal images. Usually these patients see quite well soon after surgery however the quality of vision continues to improve for approximately six months. This process is called neuroadaptation denoting the role of higher visual centers in the brain. Multifocal implants work best if implantation is bilateral.
Dr. Epstein and Dr. Ewing have been using multifocal lens replacement since it was approved by the FDA in 2005. They have employed the Acrysof Restor lens: a folding lens resembling the most commonly used implant in the United States, the Acrysof monofocal. The difference between these lenses is due to the Restor optic which provides simultaneous distance, intermediate and near focal points. Patients who choose to undergo surgery with monofocal Acrysof lenses will need glasses for most near tasks. Clinical studies have proven that patients with Restor lenses implanted in both eyes are relatively less dependent on glasses for near requirements.
Amateur flyboys and airline pilots are not good candidates for multifocal lenses due to risks of glare and halos at night. These lenses are not a good choice for patients who drive at night for a living or whose hobbies or work involve night driving. Some retinal conditions are a relative contraindication to the use of multifocal lenses.
The Restor lens is a good option for patients who desire more freedom from glasses or contacts.
Whether or not your are a candidate for these lenses depends on the results of your complete eye examination and an evaluation of your activities and lifestyle.
